Domremy la Pucelle is the village where Joan of Arc was born in 1412 (?). It was in Domremy la Pucelle that in about 1425 Joan of Arc heard 'voices' for the first time. They told her to liberate France from the English occupation in. The voices that spoke to her were reportedly those of St. Michael, St. Margaret and St. Catherine. Whatever the reason or meaning of the voices Joan of Arc heard they would lead her to help liberate France from English occupation. Domremy la Pucelle was originally called Domremy - la Pucelle, meaning virgin in French was added later in honor of Joan of Arc.

The house that Joan of Arc was born in is still standing, as is the church where she had her first Holy Communion. The house has been modified over the years but it has been restored to as close a resemblance as possible to how it must have looked in Joan of Arc's time. The house is now a national monument open to the public free of charge. It is surround by trees, lawn, courtyard and next to the church Joan of Arc attended. There is also a statue of Joan of Arc in the courtyard. Only the first floor of Joan of Arc home is viewable, you are able to see the room where Joan of Arc was born along with three other rooms.

There is also a museum, admission free that has a large collection of images and likenesses of Joan of Arc. It is located on the main road of Domremy la Pucelle a short walk from the Joan of Arc house.

The village church of Domremy la Pucelle Saint Remy was built in the 14th century and remolded in the 16th and 19th century. In the 19th century the original alter was removed and the nave destroyed to make way for a road. The steeple was left and new nave and alter was built in what was the back of the church. Thus the steeple was 'moved' from the back of the church to the front. There is a 20th century Basilica of Saint Joan of Arc about a mile from the village of Domremy la Pucelle. It was built near the location where Joan of Arc heard some of her voices.

Practical Information:
Domremy-la-Pucelle is located in the Lorraine Region of France in the department of the Vosges not far from the Meuse River and is accessible from the A31 Autoroute exit 9 - Vittle from the south and exit 10 - Neufchateau-Mirecourt from the north.
