Verdun

Located on the banks of the Meuse River, Verdun is the site of some of the longest, and most terrible battles of World War I, with 750,000 troops killed, during 1916 alone. Verdun was captured by the Germans in World War II in 1940, and liberated by the Americans in 1944. In Verdun there are large monuments to both wars, and 6 miles northeast of the city, several battlefields remind of the terrible slaughter during World War I.
