Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesSaint-Clément-sur-Guye

What looks like a simple village church is in fact is a building with much history. The church was built near the end of the 10th century (making it Romanesque) and suffered a fire a hundred or so years later damaging much of the original structure. Reconstruction started at the beginning of the 12th century. Over the next eight hundred years there was more reconstruction, cumulating in a restoration project from 1992 to 1995 leaving the church in much the state you see today. In 1927 the church was classified an historic monument.

The location of the church, the village of Saint-Clément-sur-Guye sits on a hill overlooking the Guye and Grosne valleys along with rolling hills of the Charolais and Mâconnais Mountains, offers the visitor a number wonderful views that make this part of Burgundy well worth a visit.

Saint-Clément-sur-Guye is off the D60 departmental road in the Saône-et-Loire department. It is located about 19 miles from Tournus and about 31 miles from Mâcon. Access from the A6 Autoroute is possible from either Tournus or Mâcon.
