Southern Burgundy Romanesque ChurchesFarges-les-Macon The Romanesque church of Farges-les-Macon - Saint Bathelemy sits next to the edge of the village on the Grande Rue street near pastures and the local school. Declared an historic monument in 1914 its location is not far from the village of 170 people other attraction, an 18th century chateau. Saint Bathelemy was built something during the 11th century and has the characteristics of a Romanesque church from southern Burgundy – small slim windows, thick but not over bearing walls, only roundness is in the apses and is well proportioned. Everything looks as if it fits and nothing looks out of place. Even if the builders of Saint Bathelemy didn’t have the modern equipment of today they still were able to build a nice looking, strong and lasting structure. Saint Bathelemy has three naves, square bell tower with a pointed roof and half-barrel vaulting supporting the roof of the nave, the half-barrel vaulting sits atop round pillars a few feet in diameter. The inside of Saint Bathelemy looks to have been recently refurbish. The walls look new and not faded from time. The inside also purposely gives the feeling of isolation with its slim windows. So that the outside world could be more easily closed off when praying. Also of note on the inside is a baptismal to the left as you walk in classified as Romanesque art and very rare. There is also a fresco behind the alter in the apses. Farges-les-Macon is located on the D210 near the A6 Autoroute – exit Tournus and the N6 national road. Farges-les-Macon is not far from Uchizy also home to a Romanesque church.
