Southern BurgundyCastle of Cormatin (Château de Cormatin)

Building of the Château de Cormatin in the town of Cormatin, started in 1605 by Antoine du Blé d'Uxelles. Blé d'Uxelles made his fortune during the French Wars of Religion and for a time was the military governor of Chalon-sur-Saône.

Blé d'Uxelles had the Château built in the style of the Loire Valley. The Château is built more for show than military purposes and offers a contrast in style with the Château de Brancion.

The Château's garden dates from 1620. The one you visit today is on par with some of the best Château gardens in France.

The Château can be visited inside and out with the garden maze being of particular interest. A staircase and a few of the room decorations are 17th century originals.

The Château was declared an historic monument in 1862. Parts of the gardens and outer structures were added in 1995 to the historical register.
