StrasbourgBiking in Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a city built for biking. One fourth of the city streets have bike paths. When I say bike paths I don't just mean painted lines, but real paths that parallel the street. This figure might still be going up, just last year a local street near where I live, received its own bike path. With so many bike paths there are few problems of too many bikers, as often happens in other cities. In Strasbourg even on a Saturday, with great weather, more than likely you'll find enough space to enjoy yourself safely.

I often go on bike rides with my two-year-old son. He rides in his buggy. He really likes riding, feeling the wind blowing his hair and watching the parade of passing cars. He really likes cars. We often bike along one of the many canals that run through Strasbourg. Another great feature about biking in Strasbourg, you bike along water, I like to think that gives you two ways to unwind. One the biking itself and the water, I always find that water has a calming effect both on me and my son!

Another reason that Strasbourg is a biker's paradise is that it is flat. Strasbourg is situated on land near the Rhine River and in the Alsace Plain. This means that even those that are not in great shape can easily bike for a few hours and not be overly tired when they finish.

A last motive to bike in Strasbourg is that many of it bike paths lead to other cities. One for example goes to Savern along the Marne to Rhine Canal and passes through the beautiful countryside of Alsace. Don't worry about having to bike far to get to the countryside if that's all you want to see, you can easily reach the countryside from the center in fifteen minutes.

If you ever come to Strasbourg, I suggest you do, give serious thought to passing an afternoon on a bike. You'll get a view of Strasbourg often missed by most visitors and some exercise to boot.
