Northern BurgundyAbbey of Cîteaux (Abbaye de Cîteaux)

Founded in 1098 by Robert, Abbot of Molesme the Abbaye de Cîteaux (Abbey of Cîteaux) is an important part of Christendom as it is the mother-abbey of the Order of the Cistercians. As it was here that that Order, also called the Order of Cîteaux, was founded, as offshoot of Cluny, for those who wanted to live strictly by the rules of St. Benedict.
During the French Revolution, as happened with the Abbey of Cluny much of Cîteaux was destroyed. Almost nothing remains of the original Abbey, what dose can be found in the library.
The monks of Cîteaux also founded the local vineyards of Clos-Vougeot and Romanée, two of the best wines of Burgundy.
Today Cîteaux is famous for its Brie like cheese. That is sold in the Abbey store. Be warned this cheese is very smelly, but good! Guided tours from May 1st to October 3rd 2004.
