French Departmental Elections for 2015 take place on March 22nd and 29th. These election were called cantonal elections but the name was changed as part of the 2013 decentralization reform. France elects 4,108 councilors for its departmental assemblies. Councilors are elected for 6 year terms.

New for 2015 candidates, will run in men/women pairs to represent their districts. So voters will be voting for a tandem of candidates and not individuals. Any pair that receives more than 50% of the first round vote equal to or greater than 25% of registered voters is elected. If no candidates reach this threshold there is a second round. The top two pairs in each district, plus any pair that receives votes equal to or greater than 12.5% of registered voters makes it to the second round. The pair that receives the most votes in the second round is elected.

The cities Paris and Lyon, plus the overseas departments of Martinique and French Guyana will not take part in this election due to their specific structures.

Departmental Councils in France are responsible for social welfare programs, child protection, nursery and middle schools, national and departmental roads and public school transport.
