By Jim and Emmy Humberd

Ste-Mére-Eglise France

On D-Day, June 6, John Steele's parachute caught on the steeple of the church in Ste-Mére-Eglise, a feat celebrated in the movie "The Longest Day." In that film, Red Buttons plays the part of the paratrooper. Repairs to the church include a stained glass window showing an American parachute drop - an interesting combination of an ancient art, a venerable building, and a relatively current event.
