Non-French TidbitsNan Madol Pohnpei (Ponape)

By Jim and Emmy Humberd

Nan Madol Ponape

While the M. S. Enna G (a freighter ship with 70 passengers) was docked at Kolonia, Pohnpei, East Caroline Islands, (Micronesia) we visited the ceremonial Centre of Nan Madol. A distinctive form of megalithic architecture, multi-ton basalt columns up to 15 feet long, were stacked like firewood to form outer walls. The high-speed open-boat ride in the rain and in the waves from the town of Kolonia to the ruin of Nan Madol on the other side of the island, was like the Jungle Boat Cruise at Disneyland, except this was for real!
