Non-French TidbitsMettlach Germany

By Jim and Emmy Humberd

Mettlach Germany

Our photo of the 250 year old Benedictine Abbey, with a beautiful Baroque façade, the Villeroy and Boch headquarters on the Saar River in Mettlach, Germany, brought this comment in a letter from Herr Wendelin Von Boch, "I have never seen such a good photograph of the Ancient Abbey." Hidden in the trees to the right is an unusual octagonal edifice, the Alte Turm (Old Tower), a portion of the former church of the Sepulchre of Saint Lutwinus, that has been standing for nearly 1000 years. Since this photo, the Saar River has been engineered into a canal with concrete retaining walls, the trees and grassy banks have disappeared.
