Non-French TidbitsAlgeciras Spain By Jim and Emmy Humberd One Sunday afternoon we arrived in Algeciras, Spain, and went to what looked like a Government office building, to get information about a visit to the country of Morocco, across the Strait of Gibraltar, in Africa. The sun was shining brightly on the dirty windows and Jim couldn't see into the office until he put his face, shaded by his hands, right up to the glass. Then he not only saw an empty office, but could see water flooding the office from a broken water pipe in the ceiling. Jim ran to a nearby policeman and tried to interest him in the problem, but since Jim was unable to describe the problem in his language, he didn't want to be bothered. Finally Jim found another uniformed man, and insisted he come and look. At first he also was reluctant, but finally relented and tried to look through the window from a short distance away, and of course could not see the problem. But finally at Jim's insistence, he held his hands to shade his face so he could peek through the rather dirty, sun-reflected window. Now he saw the problem and profusely thanked Jim as he ran to get help. Jim considered that his good deed for the day, and soon found another office where we got the needed information, tickets for a visit to Cueta, Spain (a Spanish city on the coast of Africa), a stop in Tetuan, and overnight in Tanger, Morocco, on the continent of Africa, across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. From our campsite in Algeciras, Spain we could look out the window of the camper and see the Rock of Gibraltar at sunset, and at sunrise the next morning. We doubt many hotels could match that view. We had made arrangements to ride the early Ferryboat from Algeciras to Cueta, Spain (on the coast of Morocco), so set the alarm for 6:30 AM. We wanted to leave the camper parked in the campsite instead of a parking lot near the dock. We got up early, drove into Algeciras and had a taxi follow us back to the campsite. We left the camper, rode to town in the taxi, then boarded our ferryboat to the north coast of Africa. Books by Jim and Emmy Humberd: Hotels in Algeciras:
