Subject: Social status in France.

Question: This is a question: What is the social status of people within France based on and how is it followed?

Answer: Yours, is a very hard questions to answer, as France is such a diverse country. My feeling is that social status is mostly based on class and race. Generally speaking those from non-European countries have low status in France. This is also true of those of non-European heritage.
Families also play a big part in someone's social standing. If you're from a well off family, that is rich or with lots of influence, then you're going to have a much easer time in life.
The education system can negate this because it is free, even college. Someone that gets into a good school, the best in France are public, will be able to, even if they were from a poor family, obtain a very good job.
It seems that once someone has made their choice of the type of school they will go to, in France schools a broken off into disciplines, technical, liberal arts and so on, then that person is almost set for almost life. It can be very hard be go back to school in France as an adult and get retrained.
