Q & AMoving/Living/WorkingBecome an Artist in France

Question:

Hello I am interested in going to France for a summer or extended period and...well I will go on... I am an American artist. I have a good exhibition resume and I sell my work through two major galleries in Los Angeles and San Francisco. BUT...I want to go to France and paint and sell my work in the street fairs...preferably in seaside towns. La Rochelle for instance...I was there and there were many arts and crafts for sale, I was wondering if it is legal for me to do this and possible to just put my work out for sale. How do the street vendors work there? Any links?

Answer:

As I understand it you're going to need to be registered at your local town hall to sell artwork at a fair. The French like to make things complicated, so you just can't show up and pay a fee, you need to have the right paperwork also. The best link I can suggest is http://www.apce.com/. Jeff
