BrionnaisCharolles

The name Charolles (pronounced shar-ol) shouldn’t ring any bells at first but after a time, in Southern Burgundy (or France) it will if you like meat! Not only is the local area named Charolais after the town, but so are a breed of cattle and sheep.

Charolais cattle are world famous and dot the Burgundy countryside. Spend time in Southern Burgundy you’ll see them as they are easy to spot with their white coat.

In Charolles there is a Maison du Charolais a mix of museum and restaurant.

From 1270 to 1316 there were Counts of Charolais. Next to the town on a hill are the remains of a castle they used.

Charolles largely missed the Industrial Revolution, a benefit to the present day visitor. Charolles is really just a big village with roughly the same population today as in 1800.

Market day in Charolles is Wednesday morning. At the same time there is a cattle market in the Parc des Expositions off Route Nationale 79 road that runs to Mâcon.
