CathedralLast Judgment Tympanum (Doorway) This sculpture believed created in 1130 is a prefect example of storytelling through art. At a time when many church goers could neither read nor write what better way to convey God's teaching than with a large three-dimensional figure? The central figure is Christ with the Virgin Mary and apostles on his right. St. Peter guards the gates to heaven. Also of note are the two bands of declarative molding on the outside of the arch. The inside band is a carved foliage and outer small circles representing the seasons and zodiacs. The tympanum is over two doors with a pillar in the middle, undoubtedly for support. At the feet of Christ is written Gyslebertus hoc fecit - Gislebertus made this. |
