Subject: Study Abroad in Paris
Date: Wednesday, August 04, 2004
Name: Alison
Message: I am planning on study abroad in Paris (American University of Paris) in the spring '05 semester, but lately I have been hearing so many people tell me what a "big mistake" it's going to be. My one friend who recently returned from a different study abroad program said that anyone he met from France just absolutely HATED any kind of American. I am becoming more and more worried that maybe Paris is not the city I should chose to study abroad in. Will I be immediately resented by the French? Should I choose to go somewhere else?

I was so excited before but now I'm getting a little bit scared! Help!

Message hi Alison, I'm a french student in Paris and I am very disappointed to see what some american people can tell about france. french people don't hate americans, we love you! of course, the major part of the population doesn't agree with bush's foreign policy, but I can promice you that (almost) everyone clearly make the difference between bush's administration and american people! As long as you don't wear a T-shirt with "first Irak, then France" written on it, you won't have any problem (especially in Paris which is visited by something like 2 millions of american tourists a year). You'll see that a lot of french people (like me) are very happy to meet american people (even if we don't speak a perfect english!) and I'm sure that you will have an excellent time in Paris if you try to meet people (don't be intimidated: don't hesitate to go by yourself to talk with other people)... but be careful, student life in paris is tiring: don't expect to sleep a lot!!! ;) have a good time in france, and don't hesitate to write me at: [email protected] if you have any kind of question (about places to live, student life, things to do...)

Message Yeah, French people like Americans. Even love us! I have been living here for a year now and have never encountered any kind of animosity towards me. I bet your friends had a bad experience and let that leave a jaded view of French people. If you try to speak the language, are open minded and be yourself, they will love you. French people are some of the most compassionate people, of course it takes time to break down the wall because they are very "mefiant" this is a word you will have to learn, but once you do that, you'll have a friend for life. What better a city to study in than Paris? I think your friends just had a bad experience, I don't think you should listen to them and judge for yourself. If you have any questions and want to talk to another American living amongst the French, drop me an email at putyourflareon (at) yahoo (dot) com. Good Luck!
