Subject: Need Help/ Advise
Date: Thursday, June 10, 2004
Name: Joel Charlton
Message: I am 31 years old and I am about to apply for a long stay visa (about 1 year) to go be with my love in France. I will literally be selling everything to be with her. We have known each other for a while so this is not just doing something on a whim. I am hoping to learn the language during this year and am hoping to find an employer who will be willing to hire me so when my visa expires, I can come back to stay with her. I’m asking people with experience in France if this is a doable situation or if I’m just dreaming. Also, how much money do I need to show financial stability for the long-stay visa? Where should I go for medical insurance since I will lose my current coverage when I leave my job here in the U.S. I really need someone to talk to about all of this. My email is; [email protected] Anyone who has any advise that could help me NOT make all the wrong moves, please, I could use all the help I can get right now.

Sincerely, Joel

Message Hi Joel,

I admire your courage! Where exactly in France will you be staying? There is higher unemployment in Paris than any other area. The first thing you need to do is to learn French!!!! Learning the local language is very important, as very few companies will even invite you to an interview if you do not speak French!!! I am sure that in one year you will learn the language very well. You have to be really commited though. One easy way to speed up the learning process is to ask your girlfriend (she is French right?) to talk to you in french!!!! This will help you learn the laguage faster! As far as work is concerned, Students with "superieur" french language level are allowed to work part-time (20 or less h/w) (be careful though as this is not automatic- you have to go through a process, send in applications- its a rather time-consuming process)and also you have to be offered a contract before going through the process. In other words, find the job first.

I hope everything works out for you!

Best of Luck!!!!
