Q & A
Subject: Health insurance for when we are living in France
Question: We would like to live in France after we retire in a few years. I know Medicare does not cover health services outside of the USA. Do you know of a health insurance plan that we can buy either here in the states or in France (as Americans)that would cover us while we are there? Or any other suggestions other than winning the lottery before we go?
Answer: Try this web site for a health insurance plan, http://www.globalinsurancenet.com. It comes recommended through an e-mail list for those living in France, Living-in-France in yahoo groups, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Live-in-France/.
In general health care in France is cheaper than in the states, for example to see a general practitioner the cost is about $20, to see a specialist $42, house calls, yes they are still made in France, $50. The problem would be if you had some kind of accident and it was your fault, but even there you would still be treated and I don’t think that you would be made broke through bills. If you had an accident and it was not your fault, I believe the guilty party would be forced to pay your medical bill. As they would have a civic reasonability under French law to do that. Hope this helps, if not get back to me.
