B & Bs/Rental Homes (Gîtes)

The sign above is for a B&B or Chambre d'hôte in French. If you ask me a Chambre d'hôte or Gîte - rental home, beats a hotel any day. Not only will you get a good breakfast, often of products from the area but you will be able to meet some locals.
Another reason I recommend a Chambre d'hôte or a Gîte is that they are by definition rural and in the countryside. Paris and other cities in France are great but the French countryside is a real, often hidden gem that many people miss in their travels. Don’t let that happen to you!

Here’s a listing of Chambres d'hôtes and Gîtes on Americans in France:
(Not sure where they are? Try this Google Map.)

Les Rossignols: Is a beautiful old Quercy farmhouse built around 1840, near Assier, in the Lot, Midi-Pyrenees. Close to Figeac, the famous medieval riverside market town, there is much to do and see. Three bed and breakfast rooms are available, from a romantic double room with private roof terrace, to a family room for four/five, all overlooking the large, salt water swimming pool. The top floor can be rented as a suite of two bedrooms to sleep six/seven, with spa bathroom and sitting room. Close to the wonderful tourist sites of Rocamadour, St. Cirq-Lapopie, the prehistoric caves of Peche Merle, the Dordorgne, Lot and Célé river valleys there is plenty to do. Walk, explore or watch the wonderful birds and wild life, which ever way you can be sure of a fabulous holiday and warm welcome.

Artémis en Provence: In the heart of Provence and the ochre that gives its name to the village of Roussillon, Artemis en Provence is an environmentally-friendly solar house with two self-catering rental units designed to also welcome visitors with physical and visual handicaps. Ventoux (1909 m.) Golf, horseback riding, acro-branch, observatory, and hot-air balloon ascension, pottery, and painting nearby. Gay friendly. Open year ‘round. Pick fresh mint, basil, rosemary and chives from the fledgling vegetable patch, watered from the rain cistern and fed by the compost bin to which all visitors contribute.
