Funny, that was my principal criteria to moving to France. Not the food, not the weather, not the lifestyle... first and foremost, HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS. The rest took care of itself.
Use this guideline to know if towns have ADSL. Over 20,000 people will have high speed internet access; 5,000 to 20,000-maybe; under 5,000- probably not. Before moving to France I picked out the area we thought we might be most interested in. We then drove around, sightseeing, as well as figuring out which towns had ADSL. If there is a FranceTelecom office in the town there is most assuredly ADSL. After you've picked the 'area' you would like to be in, take out a map and figure out which towns might fit the criteria. Google your finds and narrow your choices even further. Four or five towns should be enough. Then, find a local phone number in each of these places. and insert that number in the link provided. http://www.agence.francetelecom.com/vfrance/esav/internet/index.shtml Click on the third line in the first box; 'vérifier la compatibilité de ma ligne'. Insert the phone number of a particular town.
FranceTelecom doesn't tell you which towns have ADSL they only tell you if the service is available for that particular number.
You can find out which towns have ADSL by typing in the Zip code. http://www.adsl-facile.com/Recherche/Couverture.asp
You can always send me the info as to the towns you're most interested in. I can do some searches for you. We're currently living in Bergerac, 60 miles east of Bordeaux, but are moving to Cahors come this September. Both towns have ADSL. No town with less than 5,000 people has ADSL that I know of but I could be wrong. France Telecom makes a lot of claims. Chalk it up to PR.
Also, FranceTelecom requires a one year subscription to ADSL. Try http://www.free.fr/ for cheaper fares. They offer the service on a monthly basis.
