Subject: quick question...
Date: Friday, May 14, 2004
Name: Tamara Thompson
Message: Hey, I'm a student that's been studying in Nice the last year. I've gotten a carte de sejour to be able to stay here in France. (doesn't expire until next december) I'm thinking of staying the summer and working in Paris. Do I need a work visa or should my carte de sejour be ok? Thanks!

Message Hi Tamara,

I'm able to work with my Carte de Sejour. I think it's the same as having a work permit. E-mail me if you have any questions. [email protected]

Message A Carte de Sejour only makes it leagal to live in France. It is a residence permit only. To work in France you need a Work Permit. You could try to get work 'under the table', but this is risky. If you are caught you will be deported. France still has fairly high unemployment, and so has very little sense of humor about people working 'in the black'. You can only apply for a work permit from your home country. To get a work visa you need to have a job ready and then your employer sponsers you. Check out these sites: Consulat General de France - Main Site http://www.consulfrance-losangeles.org/english.html

For specific visa info, toward the bottom of this page... http://www.consulfrance-losangeles.org/english/visas.html#LONG%20STAY%20VISAS%20FOR%20FRANCE it states: "Long Stay Visa... This type of visa does not allow the beneficiary to be employed in France" "Student Long Stay Visa... This type of visa does not allow the beneficiary to be employed in France" "Work Visas for France... Foreigners must obtain a work contract approved by the Direction Départementale du Travail, and a special long-stay visa issued by the Consulate before leaving for France."

Message An other thing you can do is to work as an intern. You will need 'une convention de stage' from your university though. The maximum salary for an intern is 347euro/month.
