Subject: carte de sejour
Date: Tuesday, February 03, 2004
Name: Tami
Message: I have just married a french man, after living with him here for almost three years. I came without a visa, because the embassy basically told me it was impossible to have one. We have just been married (after a frustrating process of paperwork) and now I'm trying to get my carte de sejour, however, the prefecture told us that we would have to provide a copy of my visa. I've gone to my local courthouse, where we were married, and so far they haven't asked for that...but I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice they can offer? Anyone ever been in this situation? Is it possible they will make me return to the states to process a visa, even though we're already married? Also, I have two children who have been enrolled in school here for three years, will they need a carte de sejour a well? thanks for ANY info!

Message I could not have a very good translation of this, but it is what the Consulate in Chicago told me

Message Translation is:

If you get married before you entered France or within 2 month of entering, you don't need to get a visa. You must however get a "carte de sejour" from the prefecture in France as soon as the wedding takes place. This card will let you live in France for more than 3 consecutive months and will allow you to work. If however you don't intend on getting married within the 2 months after your arrival, you will need to get a visa to be able to stay in France for more than 3 months. Once in France with this visa, and after your wedding, you can then change your status while in France without having to return to the US, again through the Prefecture.

Hope that helps.
