I am going to retire in 6 yrs. My wife and I are considering where we would like to retire (we now live in northern California). We have been taking french lessons for a few years and have visited france twice. We will not be looking for employment but would like to own a small place with a hectare or so. I need to know some info re: taxation, the availabilty of health care in france & hidden (primarily financial) pitfalls that may not exist in the US. I am concerned that there maybe financial risks different than those in the US. I can always learn about obvious things such as changes in currency, electrical services, etc. However, what I am looking for is some insight by expat's who have moved to France. Any comments would be appreciated...

Forgive me for asking, but why would you want to leave beautiful northern CA for France?!
San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, Half Moon Bay! I'd trade places with you in a minute.
Good luck with your project :)

Hello,
I have a similar idea and have collected quite a bit of information on all these topics. Just spent a month in France and would like to share views with you. I live in Marin County and I too would like to move to France. ..... Gillian

Hello,
Would love to chat with you. I live in Marin County, California. Voice mail 415-267-6174. Leave a message with number and I will give you a call. Earlier this year spent a month in France, especially in the Dordogne area. Went from Normandy to Provence.
Au revoir!
