My fiance is French, and his family comes from two diffrent regions if France. His father usually gives me one kiss on each cheek (he comes from the East of France), while his mother (who comes from the South of france) gives two on each cheek. (you know, back and forth). For the handshakes I'm not sure, it's safer to wait to see if they offer to shake hands before moving to do so yourself. Otherwise the handshake it just once, up and down.

Yes, but how many and when, how often (coming & going)? It's regional, non? And related to age, social status, extent of relationship, etc.
I am married to a French man who dispelled everything I had been taught about bisous. Any general and/or regional advice?
Where do handshakes fit in the equation? It's often (but not always) my tendancy in the US, be the new acquaintances male or female. How is proferring one's hand viewed? And, as a woman, am I obliged to respond and not initiate this gesture? Give a wet clam or a firm shake?
I've muddled through much of this in real life, but would love to hear about others' experiences.
