Daily Life Metric/English Conversions Table
By Brad Smith
There are lots of websites available to do Metric/English conversions, but here are some quickie conversions and techniques to help.
TEMPERATURE: Given a temperature in Celsius, you can easily estimate the temperature in Farenheit by multiplying by 2 and adding 30. For example, if the temperature is 21°C, that means it's roughly 21*2+30 = 72°F. The real temperature is 70°F so the estimation is off by only 2°. Certainly close enough for government work. And, of course, converting from Farenheit to Celsius is the opposite: subtract 30, then divide by 2. For example, 75°F is approximately (75-30)/2 = 23°C. The real temperature is 24 °F, so this approximation is quite close.
MILEAGE: Fuel efficiency in continental Europe is measured in liters consumed per 100 km, which is the inverse of the U.S. standard miles per gallon. To convert from liters/100 km to miles/gal, divide 235 by the value. The same equation can be used to calculate miles/gal to liters/100 km as well. For example, if your European car gets 6.2 liters/100 km, that's 235/6.2 = 38 mpg. Another example: 22 mpg = 235/22 = 10.7 liters/100 km.

TEMPERATURE: The estimated Farenheit temperature is fairly accurate for the region of interest, 0-30°C, but gets more inaccurate at higher temperatures because the slopes are slightly different (9/5=1.8 for reality vs. 2 in our estimation). The temperature at which it is correct is 50 °F / 30 °C. For hot days, you can add 28 instead of 30 to get closer to reality.
