Culture There are 11 public holidays in France. It used to be that many stores and shopping centers closed for the holidays listed below. That is no longer the case. The big holidays in France are New Years Day, Christmas and Labor Day - May 1st. During those holidays it will be difficult to find stores open. But for the others it shouldn’t be that difficult. Note that the Monday after Pentecost (lundi de Pentecôte) is no longer an official holiday. But many public institutions (schools, town halls) and some private companies are closed.
