Southern Burgundy Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is off the beaten track if you're in a car but well on it if you're in a boat or barge. That's because this town is the meeting point for three rivers - Doubs, Saône and Dheune. The port is in the center of town and offers a few good fishing holes. Check in the Capitainerie - boathouse (03 85 91 85 06/06 03 98 31 79) for dates and license info. The Capitainerie also doubles as a cafe with free WiFi, as long as you buy something. Next to the boathouse is where you'll find the tourist office. The port in Verdun-sur-le-Doubs holds up to 20 boats plus there is a wharf for barges. Maximum length is 38 meters – 125 ft. There are local walking trails and a hotel/restaurant is across the street from the port. About a five minute walk from the port is the bread museum. By car Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is about 45 minutes from Chalon-sur-Saône off the N 73 national road, in the north of the Bresse Bourguignonne. By boat it's about two hours from Chalon-sur-Saône on the Saône River. There's a hotel/restaurant in the center of town across from the church - Hôtel Restaurant Des Trois Maures and another just outside town - L'Hostellerie Bourguignonne. Verdun-sur-le-Doubs is on the Voie Bleue bike path that goes to Sassenay. Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, is not to be confused with the city of Verdun, made famous in a WWI battle.
