Genevois Region Pont de la Caille
The original and new Pont de la Caille are located about 25 miles north of Annecy on the RN 201 (national road 201). They are parallel to each other and one is seem from the other. The original Pont de la Caille (once known as the Pont Charles-Albert), was inaugurated on the 11th of July, 1839. A hundred or so years later it was replace by the new Pont de la Caille. The original Pont de la Caille is still in use, all be it, as a footbridge. The original Pont de la Caille is one of the oldest suspension bridges still in use. It is also one of the highest, as the Usses River is 482 feet below. The original Pont de la Caille is 624 feet in length.
Modern-day traffic uses the new Pont de la Caille built during the late 1920’s to cross the Usses River. Originally built to cut the travel time between Annecy and Geneva, today the new Pont de la Caille is still used for that purpose even if there is a motorway that can make the trip in much less time.
The original Pont de la Caille is open free of charge and can be walked across. There is ample parking and a souvenir stand and a snack bar. There are views of both the French Alps and the Usses River and Valley.
