Beaune France Notre-Dame of Beaune is a Romanesque church at heart if not by sight. Construction started sometime around 1140 and lasted until the beginning of the 13th century. After there were numerous modifications, including the addition of flying buttresses typical of Gothic period and a porch in the 14th century and a lantern in the 16th century. In 1958 Notre-Dame of Beaune was dedicated a Basilique. Notre-Dame of Beaune was modeled after the Cluny Abbey and was also influenced by Saint-Lazare in Autun, which was built at the same. Bishop Étienne de Bagé was instrumental in the building of both Notre-Dame of Beaune and Saint-Lazare in Autun, which explains the connection between buildings. Notre-Dame of Beaune is one of the largest Romanesque churches in Burgundy. The inside Notre-Dame of Beaune houses a number of tapestries depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. The tapestries are located behind the alter and were created late in the 15th century. Also of interest are the carved capitals similar to those at Saint Pierre church of Chissey les Mâcon. Notre-Dame of Beaune has many traits typical of Romanesque architecture in Burgundy, elevation in three sections, triple triforium (wall area between the clerestory windows and above the side-aisle vaults), double high windows, tower located over the cross and a round apse pointing east. Notre-Dame of Beaune is located in the center of Beaune not far from the Hospices de Beaune and the Tourist Office. Very little documentation in English is available at Notre-Dame of Beaune.
