Chartres Cathedral Midlevel Home

Midlevel Home in the old quarter of Chartres. The slight ledge was a means to cheat the tax collector. Residents of Chartres once paid a house tax based on the square footage of their homes ground floor times the number of floors a home had. So the small ledge was a means to have extra square footage that would not be included in the house tax.
