These are symbols that appear on direction signs that indicate for whom the directions apply (or don't apply). They could appear on signs that indicate direction, lane changes, upcoming intersections, etc.

Alternate recommended route to avoid traffic problems. Pronounced like "beece" in French, it runs parallel to a major route for a long distance. It is not obiligatory. Another identification for an optional alternate route. In French it's called an "itineraire de substitution 'S'".
