SignalizationSigns in General

TRIANGULAR SIGNS
Triangle signs warn of upcoming dangers. The nature of the danger will be explained inside the triangle with little pictures.
Notice that these triangles are upside down from yield signs.

ROUND SIGNS

  • Round signs with white backgrounds and red outlines are interdictions (things that are forbidden)
  • Round signs with white backgrounds and black diagonal stripes (45°) indicate the end of those interdictions
  • Round signs with blue backgrounds and white outlines are obligations
  • Round signs with blue backgrounds and red diagonal lines (45°) indicate the end of the obligation from the previous round blue sign

RECTANGULAR SIGNS WITH ONE POINTY END
These signs indication direction to a destination.
Signs in blue indicate Autoroute
Signs in green "important" routes
Signs in yellow indicate temporary routes
Signs in white indicate local routes

SIGNS THAT MODIFY OTHERS
These are rectangular signs with white backgrounds that are always found just below another sign. They modify or qualify the application of the sign above.
Distances indicate that the sign above takes effect in the distance supplied. In French, you say the sign takes effect "à" that distance. If no distance is supplied to a danger sign, the assumed distance is 150 m in the country or 50 m in city.
Distances and arrows on either side indicate that the sign above takes effect immediately and lasts for the distance supplied. In French, you say the sign takes effect "sur" that distance.
Arrows indicate that the sign above applies to the area pointed to.
Pictures identify categories of vehicles to which the sign above applies.
Other types of signs explain (in French, of course) when the sign above applies. This is one place where you have to be able to read at least a little French.

DIAGONAL LINES ON SIGNS
Diagonal lines that are at 45° (meaning like this: / ) are usually (but not always) red and indicate the end of something.
Diagonal lines that are at -45° (meaning like this: \ ) are always red and indicate the something is not allowed.
