Seat Belts

General Rules

The driver and all passengers must wear their seat belts where a seat belt is available. If a seat does not have a working seat belt, the person sitting there does not have to wear it. Here are the exceptions:

  • People whose size does not permit them to safely buckle up
  • People with doctor's excuses
  • Taxi drivers
  • People in the front seat of emergency vehicles during an emergency

Children

The driver is responsible for all passengers less than 13 years old. This means if you're pulled over and someone 13 or over isn't wearing a seat belt, THEY (the passenger) get the ticket and not you. If the culprit is less than 13, you (the driver) get the ticket.

WARNING: The following info came straight from the book and does NOT agree with what we were told in class. Take this with a grain of salt for now.

0 TO 9 MONTHS
Babies 0 - 9 months old (< 9 kg) must be in a car seat facing the rear of the vehicle.

9 MONTHS TO 3 or 4 YEARS
Children from 9 months to 3 or 4 years old (9 - 18 kg) must be in a carseat.

3 or 4 TO 10 YEARS
Children between 3 or 4 and 10 years old (> 15 kg) must be in a booster seat fastened with a seat belt. Yet another rule you need to know for the test, but any parent of a child this age will tell you it just ain't gonna happen.

10 YEARS
Children 10 or more years old can sit in the front seat (wearing the seat belt, of course).
