PoliticsCantonal Elections 2011

Cantonal elections were helded in France on March 20th and 27th 2011. Councilors were elected for three year terms and that serve in general councils, departmental government assemblies. Terms were for six years with half of general council members up for reelection every there years. However because of a reform in 2010, general councils and regional councils will fusion in 2014 and be replaced by territorial councils who will represent both departmental and regional government in France. Elections took place in 2,023 cantons in France.

Cantonal elections use a two-round voting system. If a candidate gets more than 50% of the vote and his/her vote total is more than 25% of registered voters in their canton, that candidate wins. If no candidate can meet these two standards then there will be a second round. For a candidate to make it to the second round they must get at a total number of votes greater than 12.5% of registered voters in their canton. In the second round the candidate with the most votes wins even if their vote total is less than a majority.

As is the case in all elections in France each candidate gets their own public space to communicate with voters. Above is an example of this in the canton of La Roche sur Foron in the French Alps.

The canton of La Roche sur Foron has a population of 23,849 who live in the following towns and villages: Amancy, Arenthon, La Chapelle Rambaud, Cornier, Eteaux, La Roche-sur-Foron, Saint-Laurent, Saint-Pierre-en-Faucigny, Saint-Sixt.

These are the candidates/substitutes for the Canton of La Roche-sur-Foron in the Rhône-Alpes Region. The incumbent is Denis Duvernay who was elected in 2004 in the second round with 45.8% of the vote.
