Q & A

Subject: Travel from London to Treguier.

Question: My wife and I are joining a group of friends in Tréguier at the end of May 2002. Our present preference is to travel from NY to London, stay for a while in London and then travel to Treguier. Is this feasible? What are the different approaches to traveling there by plane, train, or car, or combination of the three? Since I am unfamiliar with our destination, or the nearby travel hubs, I need a detailed overview. If you think this approach is not really feasible, we would consider flying into Paris. My questions would still be the same.

Answer: After looking at my map of France there are many ways to get from London to Tréguier. One is by ferry leaving from Portsmouth, England and arriving in St. Malo, France. I don’t know what the cost of the ferry is, the time if my map is right is 8 hours. Then you would need to take a train from St. Malo to Lannion, transferring in Rennes, cost 27 euros, travel time 3 hours. Tréguier has no train station so your friends will need to pick you up. Another option would be to take the Euro Star from London to Paris, cost 205 euros, travel time 3 hours. Then take a train from Paris to Lannion, transferring in Rennes, cost 54 euros, travel time 4 hours. All prices are for one person, one way. It is possible to do the London to Lannion trip in one day, leaving London at 10 in the morning and getting into Lannion by 8 at night. I did London to Bordeaux one time, it was trying, but not as bad as flying from the states to France. All my train info was gotten off the SNCF(French train company) web site, www.voyages-sncf.com. In Paris you would have to go from Gare du Nord(North Station), when arriving from London and go to Montparnasse Station to get the train to Rennes. To do this you would need to take the Paris Metro, line 4 direction Porte d’Orléans. Lannion has an airport, but my experience has been that flying within Europe is more expensive than the train. Even with the time saved it seems not to be worth the cost., I could always be wrong, so you might want to check out prices. Renting a car, with only two people it would be more expensive and take more time than a train. If it was me I would skip London and do Paris. I’ve been to both and found Paris to be the better of the two. It has better museums, architecture and food. Don’t be fooled into thinking Americans and Brits speak the same language, because it is not true. I speak from experience!

This was added by an on-line visitor; Saw your site by accident, searching on Treguier, Brittany. You answered an american going from NY via London to Treguier: I'm a "vacation citizen" of Treguier and go there 3-4 times per year form Stockholm via Paris. The fastest and easiest way is to take the train from Montparnasse to Guingamp; this will take about 3h 15m. The distance between Guingamp and Treguier is 28 km. Between Lannion and Treguier it's 16 km so the difference is neglectable. In this case you don't have to change train in Rennes! And the train between Rennes and Lannion is a local one (going slow, not TGV) except in the summer season. By the way, close to where we live in Treguier there is a very nice hotel and restaurant called Kastell Dinec'h. The owners, Mr & Mrs Bernard Pauwells speak English, has American friends living in the Treguier area and spend their holidays in Miami! The food is just great and the rooms very nice. A good recommendation! If your questionnaire likes he is welcome to contact me on my mail address to have further details! Me and my wife have been there for 30 years
