Subject: Maastrich to Avignon.
Question: I wish to drive from Maastricht, Netherlands to Avignon on 6-7 July, stay for 10 days and return, leaving Avignon on 17 July (Friday). Is this a relatively calm weekend for vacation traffic? Or is it one of those insane weekends where every French family gets in their car and creates a traffic jam? Great website!
Answer: You are not driving at the best of times as you will be driving during summer vacation, and going through Lyon. The worst of those two is driving through Lyon, whose traffic I have heard has gotten as bad a Paris. That said you should be okay, as most of your trip (about 2/3) will not be through high traffic areas. Where you really might find a problem is on the A7 between Lyon and Avignon, try to travel early on this part of you trip.
