Q & A

Subject: How should I school my kids in France?

Question: Hello I love your website. My husband is living in Bordeaux and the kids and I will be moving there in January. They are ages 7, 6, and 4. Would home schooling be the best way to educate them while in France? They do not know French. Or do you think they could do well in the public schools there. My husband and I would really like for them to speak the language. Also, is there a school for adults to learn French in Bordeaux? Thank you again for a very informative website. The best I have seen.

Answer:

I do not know if home schooling is allowed in France. So that might not be an option. My son is not yet of school age so I can not personally comment on French schools, you might try reading French Toast, the author talks a lot about the French school system.
My personal feeling is that your kids will do okay, the older ones might have more difficultly than the four year old, who by the way can go to school. In France school can start as soon a child is potty trained.
In the beginning it might be hard but over time, if you are going to live in France for an extended period of time, the best would be French schooling or at least a school where you kids will learn French.
You should not have a problem finding a language school for yourself in Bordeaux, I do not know of any personally but most French cities tend to have lots of places where someone can learn French.

Update:
Home schooling in France is possible. I saw a TV magazine show that had a family were two of its three children are home schooled. It is not hard to set up, you would need to tell your local school and town hall your decision and then once a year your kids would be tested to see if they are keeping up with their age group. You would have to pay for all school supplies.
