Q & A

Subject: Barcelona to Bordeaux.

Question: My fiancé and I will be spending the beginning of our honeymoon at the end of June in Barcelona and are thinking about spending about a week total getting to, from and staying in the Bordeaux region at he beginning of July. I would love hints as to the best method of travel, where to go, what to see and where to stay that is affordable ($50-75 US).

Answer: My first thought for getting to Bordeaux from Barcelona would be to take a train. But I looked at the French train company web site(www.sncf.fr) and the travel time was ten hours, making three train changes. My guess is that it would not take more then eight hours to make the drive from Barcelona to Bordeaux. If you do make the drive, I looked on my may of Europe and it looks like the most direct route is, from Barcelona, north along the Spanish east cost, then cut across southern France using the French Autoroute(A9 to A 61 to A62) passing through Toulouse. You could always fly, but getting to Bordeaux that way you would not see much on the Spanish and French countryside, something that I think you should do. Driving would be the most adventuress way to go, along with giving you the most freedom.
As for what to see, in and around Bordeaux you should see; center of Bordeaux(http://www.bordeaux-tourisme.com), Dune de Pilat and the area around Arcachon (45 minute drive from Bordeaux), the wine country around Bordeaux and St. Emilion.
As for places to stay you could try http://www.gites-de-france.fr/eng/index.htm, for finding a Chambre d'Hôte(B & B) or www.accord.com.
