French Alps in the Spring

View of La Roche sur Foron and local mountains.

Town Hall Visit

I recently had the chance to visit my town’s Mairie (Town Hall) and took the above shot from the highest point I could get to. This was taken from the window that the town’s web cam looks out of.
During the visit I was also able to visit the salon d'honneur where marriages take place. Patrick Picard, who is on the town council offered to show me and my son the council chambers and explained a bit of trivia. He said in France all Mairies must have a visible photo of the current French president.
There was an art exhibition displayed in the salon d'honneur where the president’s photo is. The exhibit blocked the president’s photo, resulting in the photo being raised, as you can see. The art show was part of an Air Force display that included a full size model plane and the cockpit of a Mirage III.

Market Town

I had a request for more Vide Grenier (flea market) photos. So here are some photos from my town’s annual Vide Grenier2009 edition. If anyone is interested, the 2010 edition will be on May 22nd. I found a web site that lists Vide Greniers.
La Roche sur Foron along with having a yearly flea market also as has a yearly International Fair. This year the guest of honor was Russia. Last year it was Tunisia. This fair dates back to 1924 when it was create by the town’s mayor, Jean Nevière. Throughout the year there are also other similar events at the fair grounds - Mieux Vivre Expo (Better Living Expo), Naturellia (a natural food show) and SIMODEC (Machine Tool Show held every other year).
All these events and even the Vide Grenier are a continuation of La Roche’s historic role as a market town. In the middle ages La Roche’s charter stated that any merchant that stayed in the town longer than one year didn’t have to pay taxes. Meaning many stayed and La Roche became a trading and selling center. It’s still possible to see this past when walking in the old part of town. This includes grain counters from the middle ages.

Video

I recently bought a camcorder and here is one of my first videos. It’s the church where I was married, in the Burgundy village of La Chapelle sous Brancion. The church was built in the 12th century and recently a number of murals were found inside.

Global Insurance Net

If you are thinking about moving to France you will need health insurance to obtain your visa. A great company that will help you with this is Global Insurance Net. I found out about Global Insurance Net in 2003 through another expat and have been recommending them ever since with no regrets. Carlos Perez President, CEO of Global Insurance Net has always been very easy to work with.
In short expatriates looking for insurance should start with Global Insurance Net.
