Two Days in Normandy

These are photos from my recent trip to Normandy and the D-Day beaches. Here's another set taken over a 24 hour period. I now understand why June 6th is called the longest day. Normandy in June, means 16 hours of sun, sun rises at 6 am and sets at 10 pm. I was also able to put together a Bayeux 'Then & Now' set of photos.

Reenactors driving through Sainte Marie du Mont.

Stained glass in the church of Sainte-Mère-Église depicting the landing of paratroopers during D-Day. Sainte-Mère-Église was one of the first towns liberated on June 6th.

German military cemetery in La Cambe.

Sunset at Omaha Beach. To the left is Les Braves monument created in 2004. Les Braves was planned as temporary, but has remained due to popular demand.

Graves of Preston T. and Robert J. Niland at the American Cemetery near Colleville-sur-Mer. Saving Private Ryan is loosely based on their story.

Halley's Comet (under and slightly to the right of 32) in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Bayeux Cathedral, once home to the Bayeux Tapestry.

B-26 Marauder at the Utah Beach Museum.

Honfleur.

Rouen Cathedral.

The Art of the Cake: French cakes are among the most luscious and spectacular in the pantheon of cake baking. In The Art of the Cake, authors Healy and Bugat simplify the art form and bring together more than 100 classic cakes, from the Marquis (kirsch-soaked chocolate genoise cake rounds stuffed with ripe peaches and whipped cream) to the Moka, made from vanilla genoise brushed with espresso, filled with coffee buttercream, and topped with chopped roasted almonds.

Léon Blum: Prime Minister, Socialist, Zionist (Jewish Lives) [Kindle Edition]: Léon Blum (1872-1950) was many things: a socialist and political activist, leader of the Popular Front; a dedicated statesman who served as France's prime minister three times; a hero who courageously opposed anti-Semitism, Nazi aggression, and the pro-German Vichy government; a passionate lover of women, art, and life.
