Survey on the Importance of International Work Experience for Managers and Professionals

The significance of international work experience for the careers of managers and professionals is pointed out very often. However, there are many expatriates and repatriates who report problems during and after their international assignment. This issue is analyzed in a joint research project by three universities in Germany and the USA (Helmut-Schmidt-University Hamburg, Jacobs University Bremen and James Madison University). In an online survey we question managers and professionals with international work experience.

Objective of the study:
The objective of this study is the identification of factors that make the expatriation successful on the long run for both the expatriate and the corporation . For this purpose, the online survey contains questions on the individual career, career prospects, and the corporation.

Participants:
We focus on managers and professionals currently living and working in a foreign country or those that returned home.
It takes about 15 minutes to complete the survey and each participant, if interested, receives individual feedback and an executive summary after the online survey will be finished.

Anonymity:
Anonymity is completely guaranteed. The data will be deleted after completion of the study.

Questions and remarks:
In case of questions and remarks please contact Dr. Maike Andresen at Maike.Andresen@hsu-hh.de or Dr. Marshall Pattie at pattiemw@jmu.edu.

Since the quality of the study depends on the sample size, we would be grateful if you forward this information to other expatriate colleagues.

Thank you very much in advance for your support!

Dr. Torsten Biemann, Jacobs University Bremen/Germany
