Subject: New to Strasbourg from Minnesota
Date: Thursday, November 16, 2006

Message: I will soon be moving to Strasbourg, France to be an au pair for 8 months. I'm a 24 year old girl from Amercia and don't speak any France (however, I will be taking French classes while I'm there). I was wondering how difficult or not difficult it will be for me to meet people and transition in to the culture. I like to have a good time and don't want to be stuck inside the house all day! Are people fairly friendly and willing to accept me as an American?

Also, I was wondering how costly it was to travel by trams as I won't have a vehicle. I'd like to see as much as Europe as possible on the weekends. I've been doing research but it's difficult to filter everything out!

I appreciate any advice as I am completely new to Europe. THANKS in advance!

Message First of all, welcome to France from a fellow Minnesotan!

Second of all, I'm assuming you mean "travel by trains" and not "travel by trams". Since you are under 25, you will be able to purchase a "carte 12-25". It costs about 50 euros (I think it was 49 this year), and will give you the right to a a 25-50% reduction on all train fares within France, which will greatly reduce your travel costs. You can also use it to get discounts on certain routes originating in France (like Paris-Amsterdam or Paris-Milan for example). It is not valid for tickets purchased in other countries though, but many offer at least a 25% discount for those under 25, so it's worth asking.

You also might want to consider using the budget airlines to get around. In May, I took a flight from Paris to Budapest for 20¬. www.skyscanner.net is a good discount airfare site.

Anyways, hope that helps!
