Subject: Applying for French Citizenship
Date: Thursday, July 20, 2006
Name: Monique
Message: I hope that someone can shed some light for me as to whether or not I qualify for French citizenship. My mother was born in the French colony in Algeria as a French citizen. She moved to the US when she was 16 and has since taken on sole American citizenship. Do I have the right to apply for French citizenship even though I was born and raised on American soil and my mother has let hers lapse?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Monique

Message I am not sure considering that she gave hers up, I do know any child born to a French citizen is automatically a French citizen by birth. You should check with your nearest consulate, they will be able to help you.

Message Short answer - I don't think so, especially if you've never lived in France. Try reading some of the other "applying for citizenship" topics below for more info.
