An Open House to Activate U.S. Voters

PARIS — "Many American citizens living abroad still think voting absentee is too complicated," said Union of Overseas Voters chair Tony Paschall. "Citizens often don't know their rights. But registration and voting have improved significantly in recent years. Today there is absolutely no reason for any American living abroad not to vote."

To respond to voters' questions, the Union invites U.S. citizens to an open house in Paris on Wednesday, June 26, Paschall announced. "And we'll be registering voters, of course!"

But why this year? 2013 is not a regular federal election year in the U.S. "There have already been a number of special federal elections this spring. Others are scheduled this fall," Paschall said "Elections can be called at any time to replace a deceased or retiring official. That's why it's so important voters request absentee ballots every calendar year, to be sure they don't miss an election."

Who can register? All U.S. citizens residing overseas can register to vote in U.S. elections, even if they no longer have any ties to the U.S. or intent to return, as long as they will be at least 18 on the day of the election, Paschall explained.

He said the Union—a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 2011—is also looking for volunteers, sponsors, and partners. "The Union is always delighted to provide speakers and voter registration services to other American organizations," he said.

Do you have a question about voter registration procedures from overseas? Are you unsure of your voting rights? Do you wonder how voting might impact your tax liability? Confused about determining your "voting residence address" in the United States?

Union voting assistants will be available to answer those questions and more throughout the afternoon Wednesday, June 26, from 1 to 8 pm, at the Mairie du 5e Arrondissement (Paris's Fifth District Town Hall), 21 place du Panthéon, 75005 Paris, during the 13th Forum des associations du 5e arrondissement.

"The Union of Overseas Voters is dedicated to ensuring that all qualified U.S. expat voters are registered and able to cast ballots," said Paschall. "Election observers know that overseas absentee ballots have decided a number of key Congressional elections in recent years. Your vote does count!" The Union maintains a toll-free voter help line for U.S. expats living in France, 0805 696 408. But, Paschall said, Union voter registration volunteers take questions from U.S. expats around the world. More information and contact details are available at http://WeVote.fr. "Voters can even reach us through Facebook," Paschall added. The Union's Facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/UnionOfOverseasVoters.
