Summary Jan & Jeff #9: Hangouts starts with Jan and Jeff talking about Easter and that in France the Easter egg hunt is for chocolate eggs and other chocolate delights. Jeff mentions that after the Easter egg hunt we went to there was a 'snack' with about 10 different desserts including cheese cake. Then Jan and Jeff talk about their gardens and that Jeff planted potatoes. Jan's father in law is getting her garden ready and she is planting Cœur de bœuf (Heirloom/Beefsteak) tomatoes. Jan really likes Cœur de bœuf skin. Jan will also plant lettuce, string beans, egg plant, zucchini. Jeff mentions he will plant strawberries and punkins. Jeff's wife makes fresh pumpkin pie with the pumpkins. Moving on Jeff talks about going to a farm in Burgundy and buying eggs and goat cheese. Jan then tells the story of an American woman who many years ago in France tried to buy the lightest colored eggs. In France eggs are often a brown color. As the woman was doing this she was stopped and had some problems as the store employees couldn't understand what she was doing! The Hangout ends with doggy bags and how the French are starting to use then. There is a campaign underway in France to get the French to use doggy bags. It is hoped that doggy bags will help cut food waste. Jan says that in France food portions tend to be smaller than in the US so a 'doggy bag' culture really has never developed. When she recently went to lunch the food she brought back from the restaurant was meant for a friends dog. So doggy bags in France really will be for dogs! Jan ends by saying that France needs doggy bags for dog poop, as many a time she has seen it on the ground! Fresh farm eggs. Goat cheese. Easter snack.
