Internet Access FranceFreeBox A FreeBox is an ADSL modem that along with accessing the Internet is Voice-Over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) capable and if used in a ‘zone dégroupée’ will receive TV transmissions and can be a link between a computer and TV to play videos and music. A FreeBox V3 or above has router capabilities. It is also possible to buy a WiFi card to access a FreeBox through a wireless connection. A FreeBox is supplied as part of the 29.99 € per month ADSL package from Free.fr a French ISP. The VoIP feature allows FreeBox users to make free telephone calls in France, US and a number of other countries, providing the call is to a landline. When using a FreeBox outside of zone dégroupée you still need to have France Telecom supply a landline. This cost about 15 euros a month. Meaning you will pay about 45 euros a month for phone and ADSL service. I have been using my FreeBox for almost six months now. In general I like it. The VoIP telephone doesn’t work as good as a land phone, sometimes there is a delay when speaking and the line crackles now and then. But the fact that I don’t pay for local calls makes up for this. I do not live in a zone dégroupée so I am not able to take advantage of all the features that a FreeBox has to offer. Many other French ISPs offer ADSL modems similar to a FreeBox. Most have the many of the same functions, VoIP for example. Prices range from 15 to 40 euros per month. Related Links: Follow @jeffsteiner |
