PoliticsFrench Socialist Party Presidential Primary

On October 9th and 16th 2011 in a first for French politics a political party – Parti socialiste (PS) held an open presidential primary to select its candidate for the 2012 Presidential election. The primary was called ‘Les primaires citoyennes’ – the Citizens Primary.

The primary was open to all registered voters with the condition that voters sign a pledge that they have leftwing values and contribute 1€ to help pay for the primary.

The first round saw 2.4 million voters take to the polls. As no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the first round there was a second round on October 16th. The second round saw 2.8 million voters take to the polls.
