Southern BurgundyUchizy France

Located just a few miles from the Saône River in southern Burgundy is the medieval village of Uchizy. The Abbey Saint-Philibert in Tournus once owned Uchizy as King Louis le begue (Louis the studder) gave it to the abbey in 878. During the middle ages an almost square shaped wall was built around the village to protect it. These walls surrounded the main village, the village church Saint-Pierre, a tower destroyed in the 19th century and what was a priory but is now a chateau. Very few homes survive from the medieval period most of the homes now seen in the village were built between the 17th and 19th century.

After the middle ages as peace installed itself in the region Uchizy expanded in all directions. The village now reaches the Saône.

The folklore of Uchizy is rich with legends one of which has it that the citizens of Uchizy were once known as ‘sarrazin’ or foreigners in a local language. It is believed that nomads invaded Uchizy in the 13th century. Another legend, less kind states that the citizens of Uchizy were called the ‘animals of the queen’ and learned to walk with the help of a goat.

Uchizy is not far from the A6 Autoroute, exit Tournus and is in the heart of wine country, there are a number of local wineries were wine tasting is available.
