WWISaint-Mihiel

The town of St. Mihiel in the Muses department was the site of fierce fighting during WWI. Early in WWI, after two unsuccessful attempts the Germans took the town. This was part of their plan to pressure Verdun by cutting off rail access through St. Mihiel.

St. Mihiel stayed in German hands until an offensive lead by the American Expeditionary Force in September 1918. This would become known as the Battle of St. Mihiel. The battle lasted from September 12-19 and forced the Germans to retreat from the St. Mihiel salient.

St. Mihiel is south of Verdun and accessible from the A4 and A31 Autoroutes. In Thiaucourt is the St. Mihiel American Cemetery.
